The members who have insisted on extended healthcare subsidies now consider the federal workers who are not getting paid during the shutdown.
The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal workers’ union, has called on the Senate minority party to end the government shutdown so that a million federal employees will receive pay.
The Senators who have blockaded the continuing resolution to fund the federal government have insisted that healthcare subsidies, which are set to expire at year’s end, be extended in the temporary funding.
“Enough with the political games,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota said at a news conference. “Support our clean [continuing resolution] and reopen the government like your constituents’ livelihoods depend on it, because they do.”
“We want to find a bipartisan agreement that reopens the government immediately,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said. “We’re going to continue to stand by hardworking federal employees, and our position has not changed over the last several weeks.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson recently informed President Trump’s administration that a $5 billion contingency fund is “not legally available to cover the benefits right now” for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
